   Whitney Houston died tonight.  It’s not really a surprise, given her history of drug abuse and a rocky marriage, and for most of us it’s not really THAT big of a deal - just another celebrity brought down by the pressures of the world and the pressure from within.  

   But for me, when Whitney Houston died, so too did a part of my childhood.  She was my dad’s favorite singer, and I have vivid memories of her music blaring from our vintage-looking 80’s Bose speakers.  I remember thinking my dad’s music sounded so archaic and unbearable to listen to, but for some reason her CD was the only one I actually enjoyed.  I still remember what the CD cover looked like; her, in some workout-type clothes that I imagine was quite fashionable back then, a lot like what she’s wearing in the video.  For me, Whitney Houston somewhat defined musical talent for me.  Over the years, my musical taste has been shaped and formed by various other talented artists and stylings, but ultimately she was the kinda set the bar.  I know for most of you she’s just another sad story of a lost talent, but for me she’s another reminder that my childhood is getting further and further into the past.

   And it makes me wonder, who will that person be for my kids?  Still got plenty of years left to ponder that one.
