1. Notes: 23 / 7 months ago 

   Joyous birthday

   Today has been one of the better birthdays I’ve had in recent memory.  But in all respects, nothing impressive or momentous has really happened.  There were no surprise gatherings, no whipped cream clogging my nostrils (thank God), no lavish gifts.  I didn’t even have a celebratory dinner; just holed up in the library studying for an exam on kidneys and urine.  

   And yet, I think in many ways I haven’t felt this much at peace on my birthday in awhile.  And why is that?  Because I am reminded.  That I have been on this earth for 24 years, a near quarter-century, and I have not been obliterated into spiritual nothingness.  That I am not writhing in a pit of despair, chained down by my sins and stained with my failures.  That instead of obliteration there is revitalization, instead of a bottomless pit there are eagle’s wings, and instead of bondage there is freedom.  Not only was I brought from the depths to ground level through mercy, but I have been raised up, gradually, slowly through 24 years of grace.  That I am finally starting to appreciate that gives me peace, such that from up here I see that the things of the world are indeed growing strangely dim in comparison.

   But what irony that although such earthly pleasures are made small, the smallest ones become reminders of the heavenly one.  An extra hour of sleep, a box of donuts (and a free lunch bag that it came in!), decent weather, and a plastic fork become affirmations of God’s goodness.

   So indeed, we are saved, and saved by grace; stop complaining, and start rejoicing!
